The Algerian presidency announced in a statement today, Tuesday, that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune - who is being treated in a German hospital - is infected with Covid-19, in the first official announcement that identifies the cause of the Algerian president's illness.

According to a statement by the presidency, Tebboune (74 years) continues to receive treatment in one of the specialized German hospitals after he was infected with the Coronavirus.

He added, "The medical staff reassures that the president is responding to treatment, and his health condition is gradually improving, in accordance with the requirements of the health protocol."

This is the first time that the presidency announces the nature of Tebboune disease, which has been present for a week in a German hospital specialized for treatment.

And last Wednesday, the Algerian presidency announced that Tebboune went to Germany to conduct in-depth medical examinations, after his presence in a military hospital in the capital, 4 days after announcing that he had entered a voluntary quarantine on the advice of doctors, against the background of infection of presidential officials with the virus.

Tebboune has held the presidency since December 19, 2019, after winning the first presidential elections following the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika (1999-2019) on April 2 of the same year under pressure from popular protests against his rule.
