The Vigipirate plan was raised to its maximum level on Thursday, to the "emergency attack level", after the attack which struck the church in Nice.

Patrols and personnel have been stepped up, but the number of soldiers deployed in the field is lower than after the attacks of 2015 and 2016.

The Vigipirate plan was raised to its maximum level on Thursday, to the "emergency level attack", after the attack in the church of Nice.

Patrols and staff are being stepped up, to increase security around schools and around places of worship.

The military personnel of the Sentinel force will increase from 3,000 to 7,000

It is a double increase in power of the Vigipirate device.

7,000 additional police and gendarmes, half of them reservists from the gendarmerie, are mobilized and, at the same time, the military personnel of the Sentinel force will increase from 3,000 to 7,000 by the middle of the week.

All this has just added to the patrols already planned, including with the municipal police in places.

Cover a maximum of sensitive sites

The objective is to cover as many schools, colleges, high schools, places of worship and sensitive sites as possible by random patrols to secure and prevent new terrorist acts.

But the land is vast, with 61,000 schools and about as many religious sites.

The number of soldiers deployed questions however, because after the attacks of 2015 and Nice in 2016, they were 10,000.

From now on, only 7,000 soldiers will be on the ground even though the maximum level of the Vigipirate plan has been triggered.
