On the afternoon of November 2, local time, Li Mingbo will be detained again in the Eastern Detention Center and officially begin serving his sentence.

If there is no pardon, he will be released after serving his sentence in 2036.

  According to reports, Lee Myung-bak will leave his residence in southern Seoul at about 1:30 pm on November 2, local time, and go to the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office.

After that, he will be sent to the eastern detention center in Seoul.

This is after Li Mingbo was released on bail and suspended for detention in February this year, and was taken into custody again after a lapse of more than eight months.

  According to reports, Li Mingbo will serve his sentence in a single cell in the detention center and will assign special prison guards to take charge.

After the Eastern Detention Center conducts an audit, it will determine which prison Li Mingbo will ultimately serve.

  In April 2018, South Korean prosecutors detained Lee Myung-bo for 16 counts of corruption and bribery.

In October 2018, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Lee Myung-bak on suspicion of corruption and bribery in the first instance, sentenced him to 15 years in prison and fined him 13 billion won.

Subsequently, Li Mingbo and the prosecutor both appealed.

  On February 19, 2020, the Seoul High Court issued a second-instance verdict on Lee Myung-bak's corruption and bribery case.

The court sentenced Li Mingbo to 17 years in prison, a fine of 13 billion won (approximately RMB 76.466 million), and more than 5.78 billion won of criminal proceeds.

He revoked his bail order and put Li Mingbo into prison again.

But Li Mingbo was temporarily released 6 days after being arrested in court.

  On October 29, 2020, the South Korean Supreme Court announced the final verdict of the former President Lee Myung-bak’s corruption and bribery case, and decided to maintain the second-instance verdict. Lee Myung-bak was sentenced to 17 years in prison and was fined 13 billion won (approximately RMB 77 million) ).

In addition, 5.78 billion won from his criminal proceeds will be recovered.

At the same time, Li Mingbo refused to accept the appeal of the second-instance judgment to cancel his bail qualification, which was also rejected by the court.

  Lee Myung-bak was born in 1941 and served as President of South Korea from 2008 to 2013.

After being sentenced in the first instance, he became the fourth South Korean former president to be criminally convicted after Quan Doo-hwan, Noh Tae-woo, and Park Geun-hye.
