An informed source in the Sudanese Umma Party revealed to Al Jazeera that arrangements are being made to transfer Sadiq Al Mahdi, the party’s former prime minister, out of Sudan, to receive medical care after he was infected with the new Corona virus (Covid-19) last Thursday.

The source suggested that the United Arab Emirates would be the exact place to receive medical care, based on the advice of doctors and what was confirmed by a party statement on its official page on the social networking site Facebook.

The party said that despite the stability of the Mahdi's condition in Alia Hospital and his response to treatments and receiving decent medical care, the party's advocacy and political institutions saw him transporting him by private plane to the UAE, with their willingness to conduct further examinations and to reassure him.

He added that procedures are now under way to transfer the Mahdi at the end of this day to the UAE, despite his personal preference to continue treatment in Sudan at Alia Hospital.

Al-Sadiq al-Mahdi is a Sudanese politician, thinker, and imam of the Ansar sect, one of the largest religious sects in the country.

For her part, Maryam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi announced that she was infected with the Coronavirus, bringing the number of infected people within the family and the political circle surrounding Sadiq al-Mahdi to 21, according to press statements by Maryam al-Mahdi, who is the vice president of the Umma Party.
