Al Jalila Foundation, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management in Dubai, announced the support for "Covid-19" research in the UAE through five financial grants, totaling 2.5 million dirhams, handed over by His Highness to five Researchers in the medical field during the event held by the Foundation yesterday on this occasion, as part of the emphasis on the message of the "Mohammed bin Rashid Center for Medical Research", affiliated to the Al Jalila Foundation, which was recently opened, to contribute to strengthening national efforts to address the global pandemic, and other Viral diseases.

The grants in support of "Covid-19" research in the fields of genetics, treatments and diagnostics are the first of their kind to be offered through the Al Jalila Foundation, a member of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of individuals through education and research. In the medical field, as these grants were allocated to scholars representing a group of the most prestigious medical academic institutions in the UAE, including: United Arab Emirates University, University of Sharjah, Al Ain University, and Al Jalila Children's Hospital.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al Jalila Foundation, affirmed that the Foundation works within the framework of the leadership's vision for the future of the health sector in the UAE, and the care that includes the path of scientific and medical research in the country.

His Highness explained that the Foundation spares no effort in translating this sound vision towards upgrading the capabilities of the health system, especially in terms of enhancing scientific research efforts, supporting research bodies and specialized scientists, and opening cooperation channels with international research bodies to enable the various elements of the health system in our country - whether at the level of Governmental and private medical institutions or facilities - from raising their level of efficiency and asserting their ability to address the health challenges they may face, foremost among which is the "Covid-19" epidemic, which the world is racing against time to reach the effective vaccine necessary to eliminate it.

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum praised the efforts of the Al Jalila Foundation, its scientists and those in charge of it, for the Foundation’s commitment to encouraging research efforts, especially aimed at combating “Covid-19”, which is one of the biggest health challenges that the world has encountered in the modern era, stressing that these are Efforts are considered a cornerstone for any successful health system, and that the UAE, with its medical and research competencies, is able to make scientific contributions that serve humanity in synergy with global efforts in addressing diseases and epidemics that constitute a real obstacle to progress and development, and a challenge that requires raising the level of readiness. Researches and studies help to find vaccines, serums and treatments to prevent these diseases, and treat those infected with them.

His Highness expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the scholars and researchers who obtained grants from the Al Jalila Foundation, and their peers who worked hard and persevered in the same field, for their effort and dedication in their research in order to serve science, the nation and humanity, and to confirm the Emirati leadership in creating the best quality of life. This interest in the health sector, whose requirements are priorities that the UAE government spares no effort to meet, affirming that scientists are the makers of the future, and with their ideas and research, nations and peoples advance.

In recognition of the efforts and continuous support of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Al Jalila Foundation added the name of His Highness to the mural «The Fingerprint of Rashid bin Saeed», which is the first mural of its kind specially constructed to celebrate the contributions of supporters and donors investing in the medical research sector in the country While the mural commemorates the legacy of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, may God rest his soul, and the numerous humanitarian contributions he made in the field of charitable work in various situations, internally and externally.

Regarding the grants offered by Al Jalila Foundation, a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and Chairman of its Board of Directors, Dr. Rajaa Al Gurg said: “The research grants are nothing but a testament to the commitment of Al Jalila Foundation to adapt to the changing needs of the medical sector in the country, with the aim of ensuring the health and safety of the people of the Emirates.”

Al Jalila Foundation clarified that the applications for advanced research for grants were carefully evaluated in two stages, and based on reviews and evaluation, five applications were selected to benefit from Al Jalila Foundation’s grants, out of 91 requests for research grants, each of which amounts to 500,000. 40 research assistants

The research projects witnessed great cooperation on the part of scientists and researchers in the UAE and abroad, as more than 40 research assistants from prestigious research institutions from all over the world participated.

The principal researchers have collaborated to author more than 300 research papers that have been reviewed by expert researchers and have been published in a number of prestigious international scientific journals.

The research projects included multidisciplinary teams that included doctors, scientists and medical students from major academic and health institutions in the UAE and abroad, including geneticists, epidemiologists, pediatricians, infectious disease specialists, microbiologists, pulmonologists, and others.
