Today, the President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, arrived in Addis Ababa on his first two-day official visit to Ethiopia, while Khartoum announced the resumption of the Renaissance Dam negotiations again.

During his meetings with Ethiopian officials, Al-Burhan's talks deal with bilateral relations and the implementation of the agreements signed between the two countries, in addition to regional files, foremost of which are the water file and the negotiations of the Renaissance Dam.

The talks will also discuss common economic and security issues.

Al-Burhan's visit to Ethiopia comes days after his visit to Cairo, and coincides with the resumption of the Renaissance Dam negotiations today in Khartoum.

It also comes after similar visits by Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok and Vice Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Muhammad Hamdan Hemedti, to Ethiopia earlier this year.

Resumption of the Renaissance Dam negotiations

On the other hand, Khartoum announced, on Saturday, the resumption of negotiations of the Renaissance Dam between the three countries (Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia), on Sunday, to discuss the issues of filling and operating the Ethiopian dam.

And the Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources said, in a statement, that negotiations to fill and operate the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will resume on Sunday between the ministers of water affairs in the three countries.

The statement added that the resumption of negotiations comes based on the agreement of the foreign and water ministers of the three countries, during their last meeting on 27 October.

The statement quoted the head of the Sudanese negotiating delegation, Saleh Hamad, that Sudan had expressed its rejection at the previous meeting, to continue negotiations with the approach that led to a dead end in the past rounds.

Hamad indicated that Khartoum had made several proposals - he did not mention them - to give a greater role to experts and observers in the negotiation process to bring the views of the three countries closer.

And Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stressed earlier that there is no force that can prevent his country from achieving its planned goals regarding the Renaissance Dam, following a warning to US President Donald Trump about the possibility of Egypt bombing the Ethiopian dam.
