According to reports, the earthquake in the Aegean Sea caused severe damage to Turkey's Izmir Province and the Greek island of Samos, and a large number of buildings were damaged.

Authorities in the Turkish province of Izmir warned people not to return to damaged buildings, saying that these buildings may collapse in a strong aftershock.
