01 November 2020Surprise visit of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in Castegnato, in the province of Brescia.

The head of state landed at Montichiari airport and then moved to the Brescia municipality where a plaque in memory of all the victims of Covid had been stolen in recent months.

On the occasion of the feast of All Saints and in view of the commemoration of the deceased, Mattarella has chosen this place as a symbol of the memory of those who have died from the Coronavirus.

Here, in fact, on 6 September last, a stele dedicated to the memory of the victims of Covid was inaugurated in the presence of the mayor, Giorgio Cominassi, embellished with a bronze cross, the work of the artist Ettore Calvelli.

The cross was made available by the parish priest, Don Fulvio Ghilardi, for the construction of the monument.

But in the night between Monday 7 September and Tuesday 8, the cross was stolen by unknown persons and, so far, it has not been found.

The President of the Republic was welcomed by numerous residents who had decided in the morning to pay homage to their dead.

The visit lasted a few minutes, the Head of State then laid a crown and when he left the cemetery he was applauded by those present.

Later he chatted with the mayor of the town and with other representatives of the municipal administration.

The mayor: "I thought it was a joke"

"I thought it was a joke. They called me last night and I thought it was a Halloween joke. I still don't understand why he chose Castegnato" so the mayor of the country chosen by the President of the Republic to commemorate the victims of Covid.

"The President told me that the theft of the cross on the monument for the victims of Covid disturbed him a lot. I am very excited".
