Yesterday, the Chinese health authorities announced the discovery of 61 new cases of the emerging corona virus (Covid-19) without symptoms, in an outbreak in the remote Xinjiang region.

So far, 54 people have been identified with symptoms in Xinjiang, and another 219 people have tested positive, but without any symptoms.

The most recent asymptomatic cases include 15 in Akto town, near Shufu county, where all previous cases were discovered.

The outbreak outside Kashgar appears to be linked to a clothing factory in Shufu, employing 252 people, which has been closed.

In a related context, the National Health Committee in China said yesterday that the mainland recorded 24 new cases of Coronavirus, the day before yesterday, down from 33 the previous day.

The commission added that 21 of the new cases came from abroad, and indicated that it had recorded three local cases.

The total number of confirmed infections on the Chinese mainland rose to 85,000 997, while the number of deaths remained unchanged at 4,634.
