01 November 2020 "I beg you to carry out the office of my Delegate until the conclusion of the process of updating the Constitution and the Melitense Code and in any case until I consider it useful for the Order itself". as Pope Francis, he appointed cardinal designate Silvano Maria Tomasi as special delegate for the Sovereign Order of Malta, in place of Cardinal Angelo Becciu.



"After accepting the resignation of Cardinal Angelo Becciu, - writes Bergoglio referring to the newly elected Tomasi - I hereby appoint you as my Special Delegate to the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, with the task of collaborating , for the greater good of the Order, with HE Fra 'Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas Boas, temporary lieutenant and Grand Commander, and with the next appropriately elected Grand Master ".   



The Pope emphasizes that Tomasi "will enjoy all the powers necessary to decide any questions that may arise for the implementation of the mandate entrusted to you, to receive the oath of the next Grand Master and will be my exclusive spokesperson for everything related to relations between this Apostolic See and the Order. I beg you to carry out the office of my Delegate until the conclusion of the process of updating the Constitution and the Melitense Code and in any case until I consider it useful for the Order itself ".



Silvano Maria Tomasi, Scalabrinian, 80 years old, former Permanent Observer at the United Nations in Geneva, and collaborator with the Dicastery for Integral Human Development.
