The number of covid victims in the UK today exceeded one million and starting on Thursday, England will be shut down for four weeks in the fight against the spread of the virus.

The closure includes everything except the necessary shops, schools and universities.

People will only be able to leave their homes if they have "special reasons", Johnson said when presenting the new restrictions at a 10 Downing Street press conference.

- The time has come to act because there is no alternative, stated the British Prime Minister.

Applies to England only

The new restrictions will be presented to Parliament on Monday and the idea is that they will enter into force on Thursday next week and apply until 2 December.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not affected by the new closure, where local rules already apply

A maximum of six people from two different households are allowed to meet, restaurants will only be allowed to sell take-away, non-essential shops and service facilities will be forced to close and cafés will not be allowed to open after 6 pm.

Hard hit

The new shutdown is reluctant, but according to the government's scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, there is a risk of twice as many deaths during the second wave of viruses that now seems to be gaining momentum.

Even today, the United Kingdom is one of Europe's hardest hit countries.

The number of deaths with established covid-19 is approaching 47,000.

However, the spring shutdown hit the economy hard, shrinking by just over a fifth.

Enormous support packages followed, but so far it has not been enough to get the economy back on its feet.

However, Boris Johnson tried to instill courage in his countrymen:

- Christmas will be different this year, but by imposing strict restrictions now, I hope that families will then be able to meet.
