Affected by the earthquake, a total of 27 people were killed in Turkey's Izmir Province, Greece's Samos Island and nearby areas, and more than 800 people were injured.

  The US Geological Survey Earthquake Information Network reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.0. The epicenter was about 14 kilometers northeast of the port of Nova Kalovasion on the Greek island of Samos, and the focal depth was 21 kilometers.

Turkey and Greece said the magnitude was 6.6.

  According to BBC news, the earthquake caused severe damage to Turkey's Izmir Province and Greece's Samos Island, and a large number of buildings were damaged.

The strong earthquake also triggered small tsunamis in Izmir and Samos.

The streets of Vati, the main port town of Samos, were flooded by sea.

  According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Committee, at least 25 people were killed in Izmir Province, including an elderly woman who died by drowning.

On the Greek island of Samos, two teenagers were killed after being hit by a collapsed wall.

  According to sources, rescuers are currently carrying out intensive rescue work in the earthquake area to search for survivors.

According to Turkey’s Anadolu News Agency, the government has deployed nearly 4,000 rescuers, 475 cars and 20 sniffer dogs to carry out rescue operations.

Murat Kurum, Turkey's Minister of Environment and Urban Planning, told the media that 100 survivors have been rescued from the rubble.

  Due to the frequent occurrence of aftershocks after the earthquake, the Turkish authorities in Izmir Province warned people not to return to damaged buildings, saying that these buildings may collapse in the strong aftershocks.

The local government has established a tent area that can accommodate about 2,000 people overnight.
