Greek island of Samos and western Turkey hit by powerful Aegean earthquake

A powerful earthquake, magnitude 7 on the Richter scale according to the USGS, rocked western Turkey and the island of Samos on Friday.

This earthquake caused the collapse of several buildings and the flooding of the port of Samos.

The tremor, which was felt as far as Istanbul and Athens, occurred in the Aegean Sea, southwest of Izmir, Turkey's third largest city, and near the Greek island of Samos.

 At this point, we have received information that six buildings have collapsed in Bornova and Bayrakli 

" in Izmir province, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said on Twitter.

 Some of our fellow citizens are stuck in the rubble, 

” Environment Minister Murat Kurum added.

Turkish authorities put the quake at 6.6 on the Richter scale.

According to the USGS, the United States Institute for Geological Studies, it occurred at a depth of ten kilometers.

A "

 mini-tsunami 

" occurred on the Greek island of Samos in the Aegean Sea and material damage to buildings was recorded, according to Greek public television Ert.

Flooding in the port of Samos is also visible on Greek television images.

For their part, Turkish channels showed images of clouds of dust rising in the sky as locals rushed through the streets in panic.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said no damage was immediately observed in the country's economic capital.

," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter.
