Turkey: An earthquake leaves at least 29 dead and more than a thousand injured
Today's earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale in the Aegean has toppled at least a dozen buildings in the Turkish city of Izmir and caused a small tsunami that has flooded the Turkish coastal city of Seferihisar.
The first balance of victims reports four deaths and 120 injured.
Although a destructive wave does not appear to have been observed, the water level suddenly rose one meter and flooded a significant part of this tourist city of 44,000 inhabitants, according to videos of neighbors broadcast on the NTV network
.
The waters dragged chairs, tables, umbrellas and other belongings through the streets
while numerous boats from the city's yacht port were released from their moorings
Seferihisar is 17 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, located in the Aegean Sea, about 10 kilometers off the coast of the Greek island of Samos.
Meanwhile, in Izmir, a city 60 kilometers to the north, at least a dozen buildings, some of them tower blocks, have collapsed.
The Minister of the Environment and Urban Planning, Murat Kurum, confirmed to the NTV station that "there are citizens trapped under the rubble" and indicated that rescue work had already begun.
In Greece, the earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale and occurred at 1:51 p.m. local time (11.51 GMT), affecting the island of Samos, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.
