The total cost of the 2020 election will reach almost an unprecedented $ 14 billion, making it the most expensive election in history and twice as expensive as the previous round of presidential elections.
" , is it indicated from the first lines of the study by the Center for Responsive Politics.
The global economy is however at half mast with the Covid-19 epidemic, and the United States is far from being spared.
But on both sides of the political landscape, the stakes are high for voters.
It must be said that this campaign was punctuated by events which contributed to raising the tension.
The share of small donors is increasing
So with the
death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
, the progressive Supreme Court judge, Democratic donations exploded.
They climbed to $ 70 million in one day.
An indirect response to the ultimately successful Republican race to appoint a conservative judge to replace her.
Of that $ 14 billion, almost half was used just for the presidential race.
On the Biden side
, the strategy is based on online fundraising which has met with great success.
Small donors and large companies alike, many are ready to give their all for Donald Trump's departure from the White House.
This year, moreover, small donors represent 22% of the money collected against 15% four years ago.
The Democratic candidate is also the one who received the most donations from Wall Street: $ 74 million in contributions, more than four times more than his Republican rival.
