Doesn't this sound a little expensive?

Start the clip to hear the school's principal Emil Wallin think about the costs of letting students order their own school food.

The concept is used at several schools and at Nordic International they started with the app during the autumn term 2020. The principal believes, among other things, that the whole thing will result in less food waste at the school.

The school has 235 students in grades 4-9 and those Lilla Aktuellt spoke to are positive about the change.

- You get to choose what you think is best.

Everyone likes differently, says student Khaled Habra.

Every day there is a standing dish - spaghetti with minced meat sauce.

Is there a risk that students will not receive a varied diet when they are allowed to choose the food themselves?

- It is clear that there is a risk, but I think the possibility is greater that you get in a diet instead of you maybe going away and shopping elsewhere, the principal Emil Wallin answers.

More dishes to choose from

He also says that it is actually the same type of school food that has been served before, but that the opportunity to choose between six dishes every day makes it more attractive to students.

- You feel that you have a lot of power, says student Melissa El Fhaily and continues:

- I have noticed a big difference when I eat and do not eat.

I have not been able to cope with the days when I do not eat but now I eat all the time.

And now I can do a lot more.

Aren't you students a little picky if you need this option to eat school food?

- I'm not picky myself, but I think someone must have been and that is why they have introduced the app, says Melissa El Fhaily.

I think it is positive that the students get to choose food through a menu e.g.

vegan or other dishes.

Among other things, whether children have allergies or so.

Many of the children with allergies have to order by just writing a list and with a medical certificate what kind of food and products they can not tolerate.

But many neglected it, there are also some who are careless.

Some parents sometimes even have to buy food and give it to take away from home.

Shameful!

Plus I agree that one should perhaps think of hut a lot of food we actually throw away every year on average.

I think many people agree that children get more choices than we had before.

Many students at the time may remember some moss was like glue and put up on the wall.

Or just boring meals that no one wanted.

I worked for a while in a school kitchen, wonderful co-workers.

Even then, they thought that a list should have been obtained since 1995 where children could choose what kind of food they wanted?

But the principal then thought it would cost too much money for his wallet.

Give the kids more, please!

For the environment and their schooling!

In a private school it works, municipal schools, on the other hand, have the requirement to serve lunch to all students and thus a lower budget per student.

But curling children / young people is not optimal, not even when it comes to food.

For decades, schoolchildren have eaten what was served and simply skipped what they disliked, no one died from it!

There are few who do not eat home cooking and today the vegetarian alternative is easy to serve.

Especially in corona times, the food should be loaded locally, if it means that local restaurants contribute staff, it will be a bonus.

Simple, nutritious food with the capacity to make extra portions if needed.

+ local businesses and school canteen staff would provide more "at home" food as local variations the children recognize would yield fewer tossed portions.

If you did not like any part of the food, you take an extra crispbread and eat a full lunch the other days.

There is a reason why we have school lunch and for more and more families it has AGAIN become necessary.

In a private school it works, in municipal schools the money does not exist.

In your previous report on school lunch in France, many more aspects were emphasized than just food as nutrition.

With well-composed lunches with good, high-quality ingredients, the students learned how different flavors work together.

How the food was served and how you talked to each other was also important.

If you have to choose when via an app, should you then experience new flavors that you know nothing about?

Learning to eat what is on offer is important.

When we are invited to a party and dinner, we can not choose food.

Remove the mobile phone from the school environment, students in primary school need less screen time they need to practice reading, writing, discussing and collaborating even a hefty dose of physical activity on the schedule, school should not create addicts.

Assuming everyone lives actually has phones, it sounds pretty good.

If I had been allowed to choose food at school, I might not have been malnourished throughout primary school.

Most people get food at home too, so it will probably not be one-sided.
