A spokeswoman said on Wednesday that thieves stole Nazi helmets, weapons and costumes valued at more than 1.5 million euros ($ 1.77 million) from two Dutch WWII museums.

Yannick Kennis, who works at a similar museum in Overlone, said the storming of a museum in Beek in August and another in Ossendrecht in the south of the Netherlands two weeks ago prompted a security review of World War II museums across the country.

"We do not believe it was stolen and sold publicly on the Internet because the weapons are numbered, so unique, and rare that they are instantly identifiable," she added.

She added that the thieves had prepared well for the robbery, and it seemed that they had targeted items needed for special groups.

"Maybe they monitored museums to find out what they needed to steal, and they created a list and executed it very professionally," said Kennes.
