The re-containment announced Wednesday evening by President Emmanuel Macron was a decision "adapted to the health situation", but which will not make it possible to reduce daily contaminations to 5,000 by December 1, said Thursday, October 29. Chairman of the Scientific Council, Jean-François Delfraissy.

"I note that this decision is fast, that it is adjusted to the health situation, he judged on France Inter. It is a strong decision, which we wanted the Scientific Council, and it is fast."

On the other hand, Jean-François Delfraissy believes that the measures which will come into force on Friday will not allow, in just one month, to drastically reduce the number of daily contaminations, while 36,437 new cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours.

"On December 1, we will not be at 5,000 contaminations per day. I can tell you straight away today. It will take more time," he said.

According to him, the most likely scenario is that the containment ends with a curfew that would remain in place during the holiday season.

"The scenario is rather to have a confinement of this type for a month, to watch the indicators (...) and to leave the confinement with a curfew", which would remain in place until "at the beginning of January", he advanced.

"We are going to have 15 days to three weeks extremely difficult"

Asked how the French will be able to celebrate Christmas, he said that "the end of year celebrations will be different, they will be in small groups and probably under curfew".

The President of the Scientific Council also insisted on the fact that "a majority of contamination occurs within the family" and that it was "fundamental" to protect "the old, the most fragile, the most precarious".

In the immediate future, Jean-François Delfraissy expects an "extremely difficult" situation for the hospital system.

"We are going to have 15 days to three weeks extremely difficult for the health care system, that will be true in several regions of France, we had foreseen it at the level of the Scientific Council for several weeks now", he declared.

A tense situation linked in particular to several factors, including the fact that the epidemic this time affects "the entire territory", and that hospitals must continue to take care of people suffering from urgent pathologies other than Covid-19, he explained.
