Commenting on the attack that took place in the French city of Nice on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that those carrying out such attacks do not represent Islam or Muslims, and that this must be recognized.

In a speech during a Canadian-European summit via the Internet, Dan Trudeau condemned the attack that killed 3 people inside the Notre Dame Church in Nice, describing it as a "heinous act of terrorism."

"These are heinous and unjust criminal acts in any case, and an insult to all our values," he added. "Those who carry out these attacks are criminals, terrorists and cold-blooded killers who do not represent Islam."

Trudeau's position differs from that of French President Emmanuel Macron and his country's authorities, who insist on using the term "Islamic terrorism" to describe such attacks.

Al-Jazeera correspondent said that the attacker, who was armed with a knife, was a Tunisian refugee who arrived in France irregularly at the beginning of the month from the Italian island of Lampedusa.

And Reuters news agency quoted French and Tunisian security sources as saying that the attacker - who was arrested after being seriously injured - is a 21-year-old Tunisian, whose name is Ibrahim El-Ouesawi.
