"The citywide curfew will take effect today, October 28 at 9:00 pm and will continue until 6:00 am," the city administration said on Twitter.

During these times, residents are only allowed to leave their homes to travel to work, to medical organizations or other emergencies, and to vote by mail in the presidential election.

Earlier, the Philadelphia police said that about 1,000 people are taking part in store robberies.

The protests in the city began after law enforcement officials opened fire on 27-year-old African American Walter Wallace, who tried to approach them with a knife in his hand, despite repeated calls from police officers to drop their weapons.
