Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced the resignation of the club's board of directors today, Tuesday, after a campaign to collect signatures that was met with a large turnout by members of the Catalan club.

The official Barcelona account on Twitter briefly mentioned the club president's announcement of the council's resignation.

The Catalan press said that Bartomeu and his council resigned, after failing to thwart the referendum to withdraw confidence from them through a campaign led by Jordi, during which he collected 16,520 signatures to withdraw confidence from the council, which is the quorum required to overthrow Bartomeu and his council.

Several crises have erupted within the corridors of the club since last year against the backdrop of declining profits and the resignation of some members of the board of directors after the scandal of the company that the club contracted with in a grossly inflated amount.

The historic 2-8 defeat by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last August was the straw that broke the camel's back, as Bartomeu was attacked and everyone demanded that he step down from the club's presidency.
