After having said "yes" to more than 78% to a new Constitution on Sunday 25 October, the Chileans are preparing to elect the Constituent Assembly in April.

The latter will be responsible for drafting a text to replace the current one, inherited from the dictatorship of General Pinochet.

It will be the first time that a fundamental law has been drafted in a democracy.

The last two Constitutions that

emerged

in Chile were adopted under authoritarian regimes, notably the

one currently in force, imposed under the Pinochet dictatorship in 1980

.

So today the Chileans want the Constituent Assembly which will be responsible for drafting a new text to be as democratic and as representative as possible.

This Constituent Assembly will be the first in the world to have more than 45% women.

A very important measure

in a country where the feminist movement has become essential for two years

.

What place for indigenous peoples?

This week, Parliament is also debating the place that will be given

to indigenous peoples

.

The left-wing opposition pleads for the members of the

nine indigenous peoples

recognized in Chile to be able to have reserved seats in this assembly.

Finally, the Chileans, and in particular the demonstrators mobilized for a year as part

of the social movement against inequalities

, want to see as many independents as possible within the future Constituent.

Here again, the debates are still ongoing, but this point will be decisive for the future, because distrust of traditional political parties is extremely deep in Chile.
