At Åby, the Swedish Transport Administration has built a new freight railway and two new railway bridges over the E4.

Kardonbanan is a new freight railway that connects to Södra stambanan at Åby and leads to the port of Norrköping.

- The purpose of building the Kardonbanan is to streamline the handling of goods and increase the proportion of goods transported by rail.

The connection is an important and critical milestone for freight trains to be able to operate on the track at the beginning of next year, says Youssef Hassib, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration in a press release.

New broar

At the same time as the Swedish Transport Administration connects the Kardonbanan, two new railway bridges over the E4 will also be connected.

- The railway bridge for the Södra stambanan over the E4 between Åby and Norrköping is old and worn, therefore we replace it with two new bridges.

Two railway bridges provide an increase in quality for the train operators who use our facility, says Youssef Hassib.

The work will lead to changes.

- Trains will go another way, be canceled or replaced by a bus.

If you have bought a train journey, you have received information about what applies.

For example, the Malmö train runs over Hallsberg instead.

It will be an extra travel time of about 40 minutes, says Stephan Ray

The E4 is affected later

Starting week 45, the work will also have an impact on car-borne traffic on the E4.

- We will have two lanes closed and two open with limited speeds as a result.

We are doing this because work will be in progress at the southern main line, says Youssef Hassib to SVT Nyheter Öst.
