The Ministry of the Interior has launched a draft law lasting more than a year to update the Citizenship Act and the Government Decree supplementing it.

According to the Ministry, the conditions for acquiring or losing citizenship are not to be changed.

Instead, the aim is to clarify and update the relevant provisions.

The purpose of the amendments is, inter alia, to clarify the provisions on identification, to clarify the impact of travel abroad on the length of residence required for citizenship and to supplement the ways in which the language skills required for citizenship are demonstrated.

The preliminary study commissioned by the project has received 18 opinions from various authorities and organizations.

The draft legislation is set for the end of May 2022.

The Government's proposal on the matter is to be submitted to Parliament during the spring session of 2022.
