  According to previous reports, on April 9, 2017, bombings against churches occurred in the northern Egyptian cities of Tanta and Alexandria, killing at least 45 people. The extremist organization "Islamic State" claimed to have committed the attack.

The Egyptian Parliament then voted to implement a three-month state of emergency nationwide.
