It was in early October that Doha airport staff found an abandoned newborn baby in a toilet.

When searching for the mother, several female passengers, of whom at least 13 were from Australia, were taken to an ambulance for gynecological examinations.

The incident is now being investigated by Australia's federal police.

"Severely disturbing"

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne calls it "grossly disruptive and outrageous".

- I have never heard of anything like this, in any context.

"We have very clearly expressed our views on this to the Qatari authorities," Payne told ABC News.

Upset and in tears

Kim Mills was a passenger on the plane and was taken out by airport staff.

However, she escaped the investigation - probably because the staff thought she was too old to be the potential mother, according to her own statement.

However, she witnessed how another woman just came out of the ambulance after the examination - upset and in tears.

"It was extremely terrible," Kim Mills told the Guardian.

- I can not imagine what it must have been like for the young girls, it must have been terrible.

Worried about his mother's health

Doha Airport says in a statement that medical staff should have been concerned about the new mother's health and wanted her to be located.

"Individuals who had access to the specific area of the airport where the newborn baby was found were asked to assist in the search," the statement said.

The baby is said to be in good health, however, the mother must still not have been identified.
