Venezuela: Suicidal operation to free Leopoldo López
Escape Leopoldo López lands in Madrid after leaving Venezuela
The Bolivarian revolution
points to the Spanish government and the ambassador in Caracas
as the main implicated in the escape of Leopoldo López and in his arrival in Madrid.
In a series of messages through his social networks,
Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza
accuses the government of Pedro Sánchez of participating "actively in the illegal escape of a dangerous criminal" and of receiving him in his territory "without regard to international laws and even in Spanish immigration laws and in bilateral agreements on justice. "
Foreign Minister Arreaza points to
Ambassador Jesús Silva
as the main organizer and confessed accomplice of López's escape, "unacceptable and incomprehensible action within the framework of a historical bilateral relationship between the two nations", a "grotesque, shameless and gross
violation of the Convention from Vienna
".
For the revolution, it is a "flagrant breach of the fundamental provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations expressed through
incessant interference actions
", an "unprecedented and continuous violation carried out in Venezuelan territory directly by the Spanish ambassador accredited in Caracas."
The opposition leader has
a sentence of almost 14 years
for public instigation of violence, association to commit a crime and determining damage and fires for the events that occurred during the anti-government protests of 2014. A trial rigged by Chavismo, as later recognized by the protagonists, such as the prosecutor in the case,
Franklin Nieves
.
The first judge in the case confessed a posteriori the pressure received by Nicolás Maduro and
Diosdado Cabello
, her number two, who also used themselves thoroughly against the attorney general,
Luisa Ortega
.
López surrendered to the
Bolivarian National Guard
in February 2014 and from then until his escape to Spain he was in the dungeons of the
Ramo Verde military prison
, under house arrest at his home and as a guest at the Spanish Embassy.
Arreaza announced that they will investigate what happened and establish the "responsibilities and sanctions corresponding to the crimes committed, in strict adherence to Venezuelan and international laws and the guarantee of due process."
In his statement, Foreign Minister Arreaza is especially harsh against Ambassador Jesús Silva, whom he accuses of
"biased diplomatic practice
... to the point of sheltering under a non-existent and unlawful figure, in Spain's own residence, a fugitive convicted of the Venezuelan justice, responsible, among other crimes, for the death and injuries of hundreds of Venezuelans in 2014. "
According to Arreaza's note, the
Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
has promised not to allow the "political action of the fugitive coup from his official residence, (but) the reality was very different. Just to refer to a single fact, from the inside from the Spanish diplomatic residence, under the knowledge of Ambassador Silva, at the beginning of 2020 López planned the mercenary operation called
Gideon, a
terrorist action with the participation of American mercenaries, whose objective was to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro. "
The two
unsuccessful landings carried out by rebel soldiers
, which were intervened by the Venezuelan intelligence agencies,
are known as Operation Gedeón
.
