Live Leopoldo López arrives in Madrid
Venezuela Leopoldo López leaves the Spanish embassy in Caracas
The former most representative political prisoner of Chavismo, Leopoldo López, landed in Spain today after leaving the embassy in Caracas, where he had been a refugee for a year and a half, according to sources close to the family of the opponent.
As other opponents did in the past -
Antonio Ledezma
, former mayor of Caracas, or
Lester Toledo
, current coordinator of Humanitarian Aid for Juan Guaidó- the Venezuelan escaped from the regime of Nicolás Maduro and headed for our country, after passing through Colombia, where Venezuelan refugees arrive every day.
In Spain there is a large part of the López family.
His wife,
Lilian Tintori
, his mother,
Antonieta Mendoza
, and his father,
Leopoldo López Gil
.
Precisely, the latter arrived in our country in 2014 due to a forced exile for being a member of the editorial board of the Venezuelan newspaper 'El Nacional'.
López Gil was the loudspeaker for his son on this side of the pond and his work has brought him to the forefront of European politics
.
The People's Party signed him for the European elections and today he is in charge of the coordination by the European People's Group of the subcommittee on Human Rights in the European Parliament.
The former political prisoner, who spent three and a half years in the Ramo Verde military prison and under house arrest for almost two years, took refuge in the Spanish legation on April 30 after a military rebellion led with Guaidó was failed.
López is under a 14-year sentence for public incitement to violence.
In the retinas that image persists of López surrendering in February 2014 to the Venezuelan National Guard before the screams of his followers.
Today, he will be able to meet with his wife and three children in the Spanish capital
.
