Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov announced on Sunday that he had tested positive for the new coronavirus, in the midst of the resurgence of the pandemic.

"After two PCR tests, I am positive for Covid-19", he indicated on his Facebook account.

"I am receiving treatment at home, according to the advice of the doctors," he added, saying he suffered from mild symptoms.

Elsewhere in the world, several other leaders have been infected, including US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Polish President Andrzej Duda also announced on Saturday that he had contracted the virus.

More than 1,000 deaths in Bulgaria

Boïko Borissov had been in contact last week with a deputy minister who tested positive for Covid on Friday.

Before this positive result, he had carried out two tests which had turned out negative, the first Friday as a precaution before meeting the American Under Secretary of State Keith Krach, the second Saturday.

His quarantine had been lifted in the wake.

Bulgarian President Roumen Radev, for his part, had to cut short a visit to Estonia earlier this week after having been in contact with a person who tested positive in his country.

He has since resumed his duties normally.

Bulgaria, a country of 7 million inhabitants, has so far recorded more than 37,000 cases for 1,084 deaths, and the number of contaminations has jumped in recent weeks.

The government has imposed since Thursday the wearing of masks in busy public places in an attempt to stem the second wave which is putting pressure on the country's fragile medical system
