The French authorities announced the opening of an investigation after two Jordanian citizens, Moalem and his sister, submitted a complaint in which they said that they had been subjected to a racist attack in Angers, in western France.

The man is called Muhammad Abu Eid, who works as a teacher in a public school in France, and his sister, Heba Abu Eid, has been on a scholarship to study for a master's degree in France for about nine months.

The prosecutor said that the two young men went directly to the police after being insulted and beaten on their way home.

Prosecutor Eric Boyard explained that the man and his sister were at a bus stop when they were harassed for not speaking French.

The two Jordanian citizens reported that they got off the bus to go to a university dorm, followed by a French man and woman, and the attack took place in front of the university residence.

The prosecutor stated that Muhammad Abu Eid had "a black bruise in his eye, and he was hit on the nose that left a wound. His sister also received blows that left less serious injuries in the abdomen."

The search is still ongoing on the attackers.

The prosecutor said, "What happened could be an assault of a racist nature. We do not question that, but it must be confirmed."

For its part, the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement, in which its spokesperson Dhaifallah Ali Al-Fayez said, "The ministry is following up through the Jordanian embassy in Paris the attack."

Al-Fayez said, "The embassy is currently following up the complaint submitted to the local authorities and the investigation procedures."

Abu Eid said on his Facebook page that he and his sister were "racially assaulted" by two French men and a woman when they heard them speaking Arabic in a bus stop.

The man posted on his page two pictures showing signs of being beaten on his face, while the third photo showed him receiving first aid in an ambulance. He said that the French police officers carried out their duties and took all measures.
