ELECTIONS The United States Postal Service advises that it cannot guarantee the vote by mail that Trump despises
USA: Trump rally marathon two weeks before the elections to reduce Biden's advantage
Donald Trump has cast his early vote in this Saturday at a polling station in West Palm Beach, Florida, 10 days before the US presidential elections, at the start of another campaign day.
The US president, who is fighting for his reelection with Democrat Joe Bien, has gone to a library authorized to vote in the state to which he changed his residence from his native New York.
"I voted for a guy named Trump
," he smiled as he left.
Almost 55 million Americans have already cast their early vote, in an election conditioned by the coronavirus pandemic.
When casting the vote, Trump has used a mask,
something that the president rarely does, who has downplayed the virus since the start of the health crisis
and has even become infected.
"It was a very safe vote.
Much safer than when you send a ballot
, I can tell you that," said Trump, who insists without proof that voting by mail is fraudulent.
"Everything was perfect, very strict, according to the rules.
When you send your ballot, it could never be as safe as this," said the president.
Trump makes a frenzied last-minute effort to catch up with Biden on the final stretch of the race.
His agenda this Saturday includes campaign rallies in North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin, all key states to retain the presidency.
"They are going to be very busy today, because we are going to work hard," Trump has told reporters who accompany him in covering the campaign.
Despite Republicans' efforts to boycott the process, enthusiasm for early voting is palpable from coast to coast.
According to the US Elections Project,
more than 26 million people had voted as of Saturday
, an absolute record and more than six times the votes received at this point in 2016, according to
Pablo Scarpellini
.
The electoral authorities have confirmed that they are not having major problems at the moment and that, as expected,
the Democrats are clearly dominating the vote by mail
.
Data from the TargetSmart firm speak of a 53% blue vote compared to 36% of Republicans, in addition to a strong participation of African Americans -six times higher than 2016- and of voters over 50 years old,
who represent 70% of the ballots sent so far
.
The pandemic is changing the face of these momentous elections a lot.
In summer, the United States Postal Service has warned that millions of votes sent by mail
may not arrive in time to be counted in the presidential elections
on November 3.
"Some deadlines are inconsistent with the shipping standards of the postal service," the agency has warned through letters to the different states last month.
Critics, the
BBC
has reported
, have blamed the late deliveries on the new head of the postal company, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump.
