A statement attributed to the Sovereignty Council in Sudan said that the US President had officially signed a decision to remove Sudan from the list of states sponsoring terrorism.
This decision is due to be officially announced shortly. The statement, issued today, Friday, described the event as a historic day for Sudan and its glorious revolution.
On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States had begun the process of removing Sudan from the US list of states sponsoring terrorism and was working "diligently" to push Khartoum to recognize Israel.
The US position came after Sudan transferred 355 million dollars to compensate American victims and their families.
American officials said that removing Sudan from the list of states sponsoring terrorism could lead to a move towards establishing Sudanese relations with Israel, following similar steps, mediated by the United States, from the UAE and Bahrain.
The designation of Sudan as a state sponsor of terrorism dates back to the era of ousted President Omar al-Bashir, and makes it difficult for the transitional government to obtain foreign funding or urgent debt relief.
Many in Sudan say that the classification, which was imposed in 1993;
Because Washington saw that al-Bashir was supporting armed groups, out of date since Bashir was ousted last year.
