  Author Wang Mingyuan

"I am the company commander of the White Horse Company of the 15th Regiment of the 5th Division of the Inner Mongolia Cavalry. After discussion and decision by the Inner Mongolia Military Region, the three White Horse Company will first participate in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea." Talking about the past, the 93-year-old Greig still has a clear mind.

Gregg was a soldier of the 16th Cavalry Division of Inner Mongolia (later renamed the 5th Cavalry Division of the Chinese People's Liberation Army). During the period of the Korean War, he transported and trained horses for the Korean battlefield many times to support the front line.

My parents died early, the army took me in

Greger was born in a poor peasant family in Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia in 1927. His parents died in a bacterial warfare by the Japanese army when he was 8 years old. After losing his parents, he had to live with his elderly grandmother.

He joined the People's Liberation Army at the age of 16, and joined the 16th Division of the Inner Mongolia Cavalry at the age of 19. His half-life cavalry career began.

Gregg participated in the liberation of Suibei, Datong, Zhangjiakou and other battles.

"My father often said that it was the army that changed his life, and he would never repay the kindness he cultivated in the army." Greger's youngest daughter, Ge Hongying, said in an interview.

Send my white horse to the battlefield

At the beginning of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the equipment of the Volunteer Army was still "millet plus rifle", and heavy guns and logistical materials were in urgent need of transport.

So a group of experienced war horses in the Inner Mongolia cavalry were sent to the battlefield to resist US aggression and aid Korea, and Gregg's war horses were among them.

Despite all the perseverance in his heart, Gregg still decided to send his white horse to the battlefield, "I was the first to support Korea to resist the US and Aid Korea, and the first to donate horses. Not to mention donating horses, I need me, I will go too!" recalled The "comrade-in-arms" Greig, who accompanied him through the rain of bullets, could not cry.

The iron horse glazes into a dream

Saying goodbye to his beloved war horse, Gregg's troops received a new task-to continue to send war horses to the Korean battlefield.

"The raw horses purchased from pastoral areas and the Mongolian People's Republic will be sent to the front line after training." Time is tight and tasks are heavy, and Gregg and his comrades dare not slacken their efforts.

"Take 1,000 horses and pull them back and you have to adjust. Train the horses all day long, wear a bridle, and a bridle..." Gregg recalled.

Tens of thousands of trained military horses were sent to the Korean battlefield in batches, and Gregg and his comrades also heard the good news from the battlefield, until July 1953, the victory of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea ended.

"Never came back, I died in battle, I thought in my dream..." Gregg didn't wait for his beloved white horse, but the white horse would often meet him in his dreams.

"Thinking in a dream" just four words carry Grieg's lifelong love and regret-his white horse has not returned.

Half a life of the army, return to the commoner

On a green uniform, there are more than a dozen medals, the Liberation War Medal, the Chinese People’s August 1st Medal, the Liberation North China Medal, the Liberation Northeast Medal, the Liberation Inner Mongolia Medal...Each medal has witnessed the half-life of Greig’s military service contribution.

In the era of return to peace, the elderly Grieg made silent contributions to the construction of Inner Mongolia.

In 1965, Gregg and his family came to Haibowan District, Wuhai City to support the construction of the west and became a member of the construction army of Inner Mongolia No. 1 General Machinery Factory.

That year, the factory completed its construction and produced the first rifle in only one year and four months.

"My father always teaches us to be a down-to-earth person and not to endanger the society." Ge Hongying said of his father's education.

After retiring for many years, Greger still retains the habit of daily study and always cares about the country.

"I read the newspaper every day and read about the country's new system. I am over ninety years old, and I am very happy to see the 70 years of victory in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea." Gregg said.
