At Vipeholmsanstalten in Lund, the inmates were uneducated and insane, as they were called.

Some of them were selected to participate in the caries experiment, the purpose of which was to induce caries in the teeth to learn more about dental hygiene.

Swedish Radio could tell that in the documentary "Vipeholmsanstalten - my uncle's brain".

- In the most extreme group, they got 24 specially made colors a day, to eat for over a year and a half, says the reporter behind Dokumentären, Randi Mossige-Norheim.

- The coals would be extra sticky and extra dangerous, that was the intention.

Did oral hygiene develop after this research?

Some of the inmates who were forced to participate in the experiment were as young as six years old.

The five-part documentary deals with those who were on Vipeholm and who had to sacrifice their teeth for science, and their relatives who did not get to know anything.

The results of the experiment, which established the link between sugar and caries, had an impact worldwide.

- Yes, of course there will be other thoughts about it.

It is clear that even for me it is a bit dizzying.

It is understandable that this is something we should not repeat, says Peter Lingström, professor of cariology, to Ekot when he hears about the new information.
