Reliable ways to diagnose COVID-19

The chief specialist in radiation and instrumental diagnostics of the Russian Ministry of Health, Professor Igor Tyurin, urged not to do computed tomography (CT) of the lungs without the appointment of doctors "just in case."

According to him, in many regions of Russia there is currently a rush in diagnostic departments, and citizens, in order to diagnose COVID-19 en masse, without waiting for a doctor's appointment, "want to do CT of the lungs."

“CT is good at detecting changes in the lungs, but it does not diagnose infections, CT is not a screening method,” the expert quotes TASS.

As Tyurin clarified, people who do not have any respiratory symptoms should not have CT scans for prophylaxis.

“I urge citizens not to do computed tomography“ just in case ”.

So we can quickly make it to those who really need it for health reasons, ”Tyurin added.

The specialist pointed out that the most accurate and reliable sign that a patient has a coronavirus infection is a PCR reaction.
