In 1998, Mahmoud Reza Beirani was to be deported to Iran.

But the deportation failed because Iran refused to let him into the country without an ID document.

Since then, Beirani has continued to live in Sweden.

Swedish authorities have tried to get his identity confirmed by Iran in order to carry out the deportation, without success.

At the same time, the border police, who are responsible for his case, tell Assignment Review that they still believe that the deportation can be carried out.

But today, Beirani does not want to travel back to Iran voluntarily - which is a requirement the country has for a deportation to get rid of.

Mahmoud Reza Beirani says that he has no contact with the country, that his mother is dead and that he only has a few distant relatives left.

For a few years now, he has been living with his friend Karolina in Motala.

His life is about waiting, watching TV and going out with the dog.

- Only I see how bad it is with him.

He's such a good friend, he's been so kind to me.

You can not abandon a friend, says Karolina.
