LIVE

The coronavirus epidemic continues to progress inexorably, especially in Europe.

As a result, many European countries are adopting increasingly restrictive health measures.

Ireland is thus reconfiguring its population from Wednesday evening.

Wales will follow on Friday.

In France, the indicators remain very worrying, while it will take another ten days to measure the effects of the curfew introduced in nine metropolises.

The main information to remember:

- The situation continues to deteriorate in France

- Many countries are adopting increasingly restrictive measures

Reconfinement imminent in Ireland

Ireland becomes the first country in the European Union to reconfine its entire population on Wednesday as the continent, hit by the second wave of the pandemic, increases restrictions to stem the spread of Covid-19.

In the hope of "celebrating Christmas properly", in the words of Prime Minister Micheal Martin, the Irish will be under house arrest for six weeks starting Wednesday at midnight (23:00 GMT), a first in the EU since spring, but the schools will remain open.

In the United Kingdom, Wales and its three million inhabitants will be subject from Friday to a two-week confinement, the hardest measure introduced in the country since the first wave of Covid-19 in the spring.

In Ireland and Wales, non-essential businesses will close.

The Irish will also only be able to leave their homes to exercise within a three-mile radius of their place of residence, under penalty of fines.

In England, Manchester (2.8 million inhabitants) was placed on Tuesday on a "very high" alert level, which notably implies the closure of bars and pubs not serving food and travel restrictions.

In France, the concern remains

Tuesday evening, Public Health France published its daily report, and the figures are not good.

The total number of people in intensive care or intensive care with Covid-19 stands at 2,168, after passing the 2,000 mark on Monday.

The last time we counted more than 2,000 people in intensive care for Covid-19 was in mid-May.

The situation is particularly tense in Ile-de-France, which concentrates 661 patients in intensive care.

Health Minister Olivier Véran said Thursday that France had a total of 5,800 intensive care beds.

The death toll from the disease in the past 24 hours rose to 163 on Tuesday, after 146 on Monday, bringing the total since the start of the epidemic to 33,885, including 22,873 in hospitals.

Again, this is a level that has not been seen since the month of May.

The number of people who tested positive in 24 hours is 20,468, for a total of 930,745, according to data from the health agency.

The positivity rate (proportion of positive tests compared to the total tests carried out) continues to increase, to 13.6%, against only 4.5% at the beginning of September.

Serial restrictions in Europe

The signals are also red in Italy, where two regions, rich Lombardy - the region of Milan, in the north - and Campania - that of Naples, in the south - will introduce a curfew, from Thursday, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for three weeks for the first, and from Friday at 11 p.m. for the second.

First country in Europe hit by the pandemic in the spring, Italy has known since Friday a sharp increase in contaminations (more than 10,000 per day).

Lombardy, its economic heart, is once again the most affected.

A curfew also came into effect Tuesday in Slovenia: the two million inhabitants will not be allowed to go out between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

In Spain, the city of Burgos (north) joined the increasingly long list of partially cordoned off municipalities overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The region of Navarre (north) will suffer the same fate from Thursday.

Nearly 1.12 million deaths worldwide, a figure surely underestimated

The pandemic has killed at least 1,119,590 around the world since the end of December, including more than 252,000 in Europe, according to a report established by AFP on Tuesday.

More than 40,416,800 cases of infection have been diagnosed.

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with at least 220,940 deaths, followed by Brazil (154,837 dead), India (115,197), Mexico (86,338) and the United Kingdom. Uni (43.726). These reports are probably underestimated, as shown in an American study by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) published on Tuesday, according to which the excess mortality linked to the pandemic in the United States was in fact 300,000 people.
