A man was sentenced by the Criminal Court of Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), Monday, to 8 months in prison, including 4 months suspended, and his partner and his mother to 4 months suspended, for stealing packages.

Since the beginning of October, the police officers of the Perpignan police station had been inundated with complaints for the theft of packages from the mailboxes of a residence.

A total of 33 victims have come forward, say the police.

The use of video surveillance enabled investigators to note the presence, on several occasions, of the same two cars, occupied by a man and two women, parked in front of the entrance to the building, near the letter boxes.

Post office "passes"

The modus operandi was similar each time, indicate the police services: the man, aged in his thirties, got out of the vehicle, opened the block of mailboxes, using a "pass" reserved for the Post Office, and stole parcels and mail that he gave to the two occupants of the vehicle who kept watch.

The trio were quickly able to be arrested.

At the home of the thirty-something, objects and packages from the thefts, as well as a bunch of keys made up, among other things, of two "passes" were found.

In police custody, all admitted the facts.

The 37-year-old son, already known to the police, in particular for acts of theft, explained to investigators having committed these misdeeds for lack of money, due to a severe addiction to cocaine.

He said he started his criminal activity at the end of confinement and had cracked down on several residences in the department.

His companion confirmed "serious financial problems", indicate the police.

As for her mother, she told investigators that she wanted to help her son.
