The Philippine authorities announced, on Wednesday, that one person was killed and thousands were evacuated, after floods swept across two regions of the country.

The authorities reported that thousands of families were evacuated on the main island of Luzon due to Tropical Storm "Soudel", known locally as "Bebeto".

About 35,000 families were affected by the torrential floods, after days of torrential rains in Mindanao, southern Philippines.

The Civil Defense Office said that Soudle, the 16th storm sweeping the country this year, caused the evacuation of 4,790 families in southern Luzon, most of them from Quezon.

Hundreds of families in coastal and mountainous areas, north and central Luzon, were forced to leave their homes due to high winds and heavy rains.

Local police said there were 1,000 vehicles stranded along the National Highway, near Lopez in Quezon, yesterday morning.

The State Meteorological Office reported that "Soudle" has intensified as it moves across the South China Sea, and is expected to leave the Philippines on Thursday.

Rescuers found the body of a 33-year-old man in Makilala, Cotobato, hours after it had been bulldozed by strong currents.

• "Soudl" is the 16th storm sweeping the country this year, and caused the evacuation of 4,790 families in southern Luzon, most of them from the Quezon region.
