  • Salerno, Sis 118: "Italy in absurd delay on call geolocation"

21 October 2020What to do when you have Covid-like symptoms.

How to behave.

Or even just distress calls for fever and respiratory problems that don't go away.

These are the questions that in recent weeks arrive at the 118 stations, which have marked an increase between 15 and 30%.

This is the picture made by the national president of the Italian system society (Sis) 118, Mario Balzanelli, who also reports a strong alarm among the population.

"There is a great tension", he explains, "it is called not only for immediate help, but also for information on how to behave when symptoms appear that can make you fear the Sars-CoV2 virus"

"We need the 118 power stations to be strengthened, nurses are needed to answer users' calls by providing the required information as required by our statute. And - adds Mario Balzanelli - we need more ambulances as well as dedicated medical-nursing staff".

Balzanelli explains that with the increase in infections "patients call us because they have a high fever and breathing difficulties".

The risks in the ambulance

But there are not only the calls, there is also the risk of infection in the ambulances.

"You have to realize Balzanelli points out - how it feels when one of these patients coughs in your face repeatedly at 25 centimeters and you can't move because you're sitting in an ambulance and the distances are so close."

"Now there is no shortage of protections but we hope that they will be provided to us with the necessary timeliness and quality. The issue is having the right protections. The mistakes of the other time must not be committed".
