21 October 2020Peculated ('"because he acted as a public official") and aggravated embezzlement: these are the crimes of which Marogna is accused.

The Vatican investigators accuse the Sardinian manager, in her capacity as administrator of Logsic Doo, a company based in Slovenia "set up for the purpose of providing non-residential social assistance and financed by the Secretariat of State", for having appropriated the 575 thousand euros "that had been entrusted by reason of its functions using them for discretionary purchases incompatible with the purposes established by the Secretariat of State at the time of the assignment itself "and to have acted" with several executive acts of the same resolution "and" in cooperation with unknown persons " .

The investigation originated from a report by the Slovenian Police that led to the arrest of Cecilia Marogna, the 39-year-old from Cagliari who became known as the 'Lady of Becciu' for the fiduciary bond that binds her to the former number two of the Secretariat of State Vatican, arrested in Milan on 13 October last, following an international arrest warrant requested by the Office of the Promoter of Justice of the Holy See.

According to the request for validation of the arrest for extraditional purposes sent to the Italian Minister of Justice, Alfonso Bonafede, whom Adnkronos was able to view, the suspicions of the Slovenian investigators were raised by a series of anomalous movements recorded on two accounts in the name of Logsic Doo, the company based in Ljubljana of which the Sardinian manager is the administrator.

Following the report, the men of the Vatican Gendarmerie, through bank checks, found that the two current accounts "were powered by nine bank transfers issued by the Secretariat of State between 20-12-2018 and 11-7-2019 for a total amount of 575,000 euros "and that many of the transactions carried out" concerned expenses that were not compatible with the corporate purpose of the company ".

In fact, from the company's chamber of commerce survey, it emerged that Logsic Doo should have carried out non-residential social assistance activities while from the analysis of the company's account statements it emerged that the expenses incurred by Marogna "had no bearing on the aforementioned welfare purposes. and humanitarian ".

In addition, the analysis of the accounts revealed over 120 payments between shops such as Prada, Tod'S, Hogan, Missoni, La Rinascente, Montblanc, Louis Vuitton, Maxmara, Poltronesofa, Auchan, prestigious hotels (such as the Hotel Bagni Nuovi in Bormio and the 'Hotel Cervo in Costa Smeralda), luxury restaurants and, the investigators underline, "further investigations are underway".

Parolin: "People are bewildered"

"What is happening and the various responsibilities that will be accepted by the judicial authority can only create disorientation".

This was stated by the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, responding to a question placed on the sidelines of a conference on ecumenism underway in Rome.

the reference is to the Becciu case and to the trickle of revelations on the Becciu case.

"It can only create disorientation among the faithful", explained the cardinal, even though "a falling tree makes much more noise than a growing forest. In the church, the forest grows, there is so much good, the evil that exists. it is unfortunately present as in any reality but we should also keep all the good there is ".

Parolin also said he did not know whether Angelu Becciu, at the end of the investigation by the Vatican judicial authorities, will be put on trial or not.

The secretary of state also answered a question about the fact that a couple of weeks ago he left the commission of cardinals on the IOR.

"A normal change," he commented.
