Jeju Provincial Governor Won Hee-ryong announced on the 20th that if Japan releases contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea, it will file a lawsuit with domestic and international courts.

Governor Won held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Hall on that day, saying, "As the governor of Jeju Island, Korea, we have an obligation to protect our territorial waters and the safety of the people."

He urged, "The Japanese government should immediately stop preparing for (discharging contaminated water from nuclear power plants). Furthermore, provide all information and data related to contaminated water in Fukushima transparently, and discuss the contaminated water treatment plan."

Governor Won stressed, "If the Japanese government rejects this request, Jeju Island will respond by all means in solidarity with all parties to which the contaminated water comes in."

He said, "The Japanese citizens and residents of the local government are also opposed to the discharge of contaminated water." They also said they would file a complaint with the International Court.
