The main opposition party in Guinea on Tuesday (October 20) denounced a "large-scale fraud" aimed at depriving it of victory in the presidential election on Sunday.

The national electoral commission announced in the evening the first results in four constituencies out of the 38 of the country, including three in Conakry and its periphery.

Outgoing president Alpha Condé, who is running for a controversial third term at 82, largely wins in the four constituencies over his main rival Cellou Dalein Diallo, and exceeds 50% in the first round in three of them.

An official of the commission judged to AFP "impossible to extrapolate" a national result from these results alone.

Alpha Condé is "in the process of doing everything to change the results of the ballot box in his favor," had previously accused the press Fodé Oussou Fofana, campaign director of Cellou Dalein Diallo.

"The territorial administrators, the defense and security forces, the ministers, the senior executives of the central administration and certain magistrates are all mobilized to carry out this fraud on a large scale", he detailed.

Violence

Cellou Dalein Diallo said on Monday that he had won the election "in the first round", a unilateral declaration that triggered scenes of jubilation in neighborhoods in the suburbs of Conakry, his stronghold and that of his party, the Union des forces democratic (UFDG), but also the condemnation of the ruling party as well as violence.

These have cost the lives of "four teenagers killed by the defense and security forces under the orders of Alpha Condé", said Fodé Oussou Fofana.

The UFDG had so far reported three deaths.

UFDG communications director Ousmane Gaoual Diallo estimated Tuesday that "candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo would obtain between 53 and 58%", while the tension remains palpable in Conakry.

Surrounded home

Cellou Dalein Diallo's home was surrounded early Tuesday evening by around 25 gendarmes and police, equipped with helmets and shields and supported by two riot trucks, an AFP journalist noted.

"Unable to face the truth of the ballot box, the anti-democratic regime of Alpha Condé is trying to impose itself by force. It is time for # Guinea to turn the page of this liberticidal and fratricidal regime", wrote on Facebook Cellou Dalein Diallo.

Alpha Condé for his part broke the silence he had observed since Sunday with a short message on Facebook: "#You and I. I salute the political maturity of our fellow citizens. Guinea is one and indivisible. #Peace # Quietude # Serenity ".

"The electoral process took place in peace, in accordance with the legislation in force in Guinea," said the head of the observation mission of the Economic Community of West African States at the beginning of the afternoon in Conakry. (Cédéao), José Maria Neves.

Despite fears of violence, "the ballot took place in transparency, security, calm and tranquility", added the chief observers of the African Union, Augustin Matata Ponyo.

A second round, if it should take place, is scheduled for November 24.
