Sharjah Airport Police foiled a scheme to fraudulently smuggle 1.6 kilograms of gold, estimated at 312,000 dirhams, as the perpetrators were caught trying to get out on a flight.

The details of the incident are due to the suspicion of two persons of Asian nationality at the baggage checkpoint at Sharjah International Airport, while they were trying to pass new perfume bottles placed in a box suggesting that they are materials and essential oils.

Sharjah Airport Police reported that the team was able to uncover the smuggling scheme, as smugglers used 42 perfume bottles, after completely emptying them of aromatic materials, replacing them with gold powder, and mixing them with other chemicals, in order to deceive the inspection staff that they are perfumed bottles, and they were wrapped in an elaborate manner similar to the original. She added: “The Criminal Investigation Department of Sharjah Police was notified to follow up on the incident, revealed any other details related to the gang, and by forming a specialized team, it was found that a third and fourth party was behind this crime, and planning to smuggle gold out of the country. The two suspects were seized, and upon interrogation with them, they admitted that they had bought pure gold powder, which was mixed with other materials until it appeared to be a fragrant liquid, and they gave it to the first and second accused, in order to smuggle it out of the country.
