  • The outdoor car parks (a thousand spaces) in the Gloriette district will be removed in favor of a pedestrian area.

  • The underground car park project, which was supposed to compensate for the disappearance of the parking lots, was finally also abandoned.

The decision was endorsed by the elected representatives of Nantes Métropole this Friday.

The planned underground car park under the Place de la Petite-Hollande is canceled.

A renunciation officially motivated by "the technical constraints", "the additional costs" and "the ambition to rethink the place of the car in the city".

It is also a political concession granted by Johanna Rolland (PS), initially in favor of underground parking, to her environmental allies who were against it.

The idea of building a car park (around 500 spaces) under the square was put forward during the presentation of the major transformation project of the Gloriette-Petite-Hollande district.

By 2024-2025, the huge open-air car parks (more than a thousand spaces) will in fact disappear in favor of a large vegetated and essentially pedestrianized esplanade.

"These are motorists who come to consume"

An evolution which will undoubtedly embellish and appease this unattractive sector.

However, the elimination of parking lots is of great concern to downtown merchants.

“This car park is always used, whether during the day or in the evening, argues Julien Bainvel (LR), metropolitan councilor of the opposition.

The people who come to park there are not residents.

It is external motorists who come to consume.

What solution will we offer them tomorrow?

We know that the public transport network does not offer a sufficient alternative.

"The LR mayor of Basse-Goulaine, Alain Vey, also denounced a" serious historical setback with consequences for our territory ".

“There is a political choice, clearly assumed, defends Johanna Rolland, president of Nantes Métropole, with reference to the agreement made with environmentalists.

But, in addition, the technical studies carried out also led us to be alerted to a risk of exceeding the cost of this car park (20 million euros).

"

Nantes Métropole indicates that “reflection is to be carried out for the parking of the fairgrounds of the market [the Saturday market will be maintained] and of the residents, in connection with the 971 places of the Multimedia and Commerce car parks.

The community also explains that the cancellation of the underground car park project will shorten the work in the area and "reduce nuisance".

And reminds that the Semitan network will benefit from several future investments: new park-and-ride facilities, extension of the chronobus network, extension of the tramway, lower prices, etc.
