  • After a first plan of 6.5 million euros, the Rennes metropolitan area voted Thursday evening to extend the envelope of 4 million euros to help sectors in crisis.

  • In particular, the exemption from terrace fees for bars and restaurants will be extended until June.

"We would have hoped to present a recovery plan."

But the health crisis is still there, it is ultimately a rebound plan that President Nathalie Appéré presented Thursday evening to elected officials in Rennes.

In the spring, the metropolis had already released 6.5 million euros to help small and very small local businesses.

Five months later, this aid is still waiting for beneficiaries since only "1.6 million euros have been consumed", according to Sébastien Sémeril, vice-president of Rennes Métropole in charge of economic development.

"Some businesses have passed by", assures Nathalie Appéré.

In order not to harm them, the metropolis has therefore decided to extend this aid and even to strengthen it with an envelope of four million euros additional for sectors in crisis.

Bars and restaurants will thus be exempt from terrace fees until June 30, 2021, ie "a shortfall of 750,000 euros for the metropolis", indicates Sébastien Sémeril.

Ditto for hotel establishments which will not have to pay tourist tax in 2020. Specific aid for the cultural, events and creative industries sectors is also provided for in this plan which aims to provide "an immediate response »To the most affected sectors.

Eight sectors of excellence to consolidate

Responding to the emergency, the metropolis also wants to give itself a little visibility in this troubled period.

This involves a second part of the plan, more distant, this time with a budget of 30 million euros to "help structure the sectors of the future", indicates Sébastien Sémeril.

In this area, eight sectors of "regional excellence" were identified by elected officials.

It includes civil and military cybersecurity, automotive and mobility, with an industrial center of excellence project planned for the PSA site in Janais, sustainable building and food.

"Rennes is the capital of the first agricultural and agrifood region in France and we have a role to play in structuring this sector", indicates the elected socialist.

Behind this plan, it is thus the whole future economic landscape of the city which takes shape with the declared ambition "to engage the Rennes economy towards resilience".
