The spread of infection is increasing sharply in Europe and is now continuing up in Sweden.

This is especially true in Örebro, Stockholm and Uppsala.

According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, the spread is due to social contacts.

How would you describe the situation?

- I think the development is deeply worrying.

We now see a situation almost daily where patients come to us and are seriously ill in a way that we have not seen in several months, says Fredrik Sund, operations manager for the infection clinic Akademiska sjukhuset in Uppsala.

Fredrik Sund says that the University Hospital has had to resort to the escalation plans that were planned this summer.

The emergency room has also had more problems.

Something that has led to the hospital having to change but states that there are resources.

The wards are full

Who are the patients you are receiving now?

- It's a bit mixed.

Some are older and many are basically sick in some way.

We have seen several with risk factors.

But there are also a couple that you think should not have been affected by this.

Which may not have so many risk factors, says Fredrik Sund and explains that many are between 40 and 90 years old.

The situation at the hospital is not as it was last spring, but Fredrik Sund points out that the development speaks for a rapid increase in patients who come to the Academic Hospital.

At the infection clinic, the situation is exactly as it was in the spring.

- It is not at the whole hospital but for us it is just like last spring.

Our departments are full now, says Fredrik Sund.

"Just like this spring"

He does not want to call it a second wave but describes a strained situation for the care staff.

- It is difficult to call it a second wave, there will be more in the whole society.

But for us, it definitely feels that way.

For our staff, it is exactly as it was last spring, says Fredrik Sund.

Today, the Public Health Agency warned of social contacts and in the student city of Uppsala, it may have been the student parties that caused the spread of infection to pick up speed again, according to the infection doctor.

- It probably works as it does in all cities with younger people.

Maybe that's why it took off first in Uppsala.

It is not something we know so far, but it is important to point out when tracing the infection, says Fredrik Sund.
