"We are in a serious phase of the pandemic": said the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, at the end of a summit that lasted over eight hours with the governors of the Laender, convened to decide on new measures to contain the coronavirus, between including the extension of the obligation of the mask, limits to private parties, closures at 11 pm of restaurants and bars and prohibitions of gatherings of more than 10 people in areas with a high risk of contagion.

"Germany is already in an exponential phase, in which infections have returned to grow very quickly", added the Chancellor speaking in front of the press.

"We are at a decisive step", explained Merkel, who also addressed an appeal to citizens, asking them "to participate all of them" in the fight against the coronavirus "in this critical and decisive phase", following the rules carefully, to start with social distancing.

"We can fight against the virus", added the chancellor, "the important thing is to reduce contact" between people.

The point on which an agreement was not reached between the federal government and Laender was that of the ban on overnight stays in hotels for people arriving from other areas of the country classified as at risk: while the various Laender maintain different regulations on the matter, it is convened on the issue a new meeting with the executive and the chancellor to be held after 8 November.

Instead, it is the governor of Bavaria, Markus Soeder, who warns that "we are much closer to a second lockdown than we want to admit".

In this sense, according to Soeder, we are close to the point of no return "to prevent this from happening": otherwise there will be "great damage" to the economy and society.

Germany has recorded 6,638 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, which also mark a new record of infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

Official data report it.

The previous record of cases in 24 hours was on March 28 when 6,294 were recorded.
