Greece: leader of neo-Nazi Golden Dawn sentenced to 13 years in prison

The leader and six former executives of the far-right Golden Dawn party were given heavy prison sentences on Wednesday 14 October by the Criminal Court of Athens, which found them guilty of having led a "criminal organization"

Nikos Michaloliakos, the leader of Golden Dawn, and five leaders of the party including the former spokesman of the neo-Nazi party Ilias Kassidiaris, the deputy Christos Pappas, right-hand man of Michaloliakos, the former deputies Ilias Panagiotaros and Georgios Germenis were sentenced to thirteen years in prison.

Independent MEP Ioannis Lagos also receives 13 years in prison and a year and a half in prison for carrying weapons.

His parliamentary immunity will have to be lifted by the European Parliament, at the request of Greece.

This requires that the arrest warrant be issued.

Only Artemis Matthaiopoulos, the ex-son-in-law of Michaloliakos, was sentenced to ten years in prison, short of requisitions.

The murderer of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, Yorgos Roupakias, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The victim's father said he was dissatisfied: "

 I was waiting for 20 years in prison for the leadership of Golden Dawn

 ", regretted Panayotis Fyssas, civil party in the trial, alongside the mother and sister of the activist of left murdered.

Last week, Golden Dawn was considered by the courts to be

a criminal organization

.

The sentences handed down on October 14 are therefore the consequence of this judgment.
