French President Emmanuel Macron announced tonight the establishment of
a curfew
for French cities on high alert due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Specifically, the curfew has been decreed in Paris and its periphery and in eight other cities,
between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am, for at least four weeks
and starting next Saturday.
"It would be disproportionate to reconfine the entire country," said the president.
Macron, who communicates a new series of measures in a joint interview with two televisions that takes place from 8:00 p.m., also plans to announce the
declaration of the state of health emergency at the national level
, said radio Europe 1 and the network of BFM-TV news.
Some of the main cities of the country, such as Paris and its region, Lyon or Lille, are in a state of maximum alert and therefore fall within that curfew.
"We have not lost control of the situation," he
warned as soon as the interview began, although he acknowledged that "this second wave is different."
"We have to react," he added.
Macron's appearance on national television and during prime time seeks to draw the attention of the population to the
progressive worsening of the health situation
due to the pandemic, which has caused almost 33,000 deaths in the country and threatens to collapse the units of intensive care in various hospital areas, including Paris and its region.
